Hey friends! It’s me La Rae, owner here at Wild Soul Weddings!
Comin’ at ya with a personal post today! If you follow me on Instagram, you may remember that this summer my husband and I decided to do a little bedroom makeover.
We live in a cute little house that was once a one room school house, and we have been updating it for the past 7 years.
The bedroom is really only seen by us, which means that it has been pretty low on the priority list as far as renovations go. However, we wanted to change that!
We have done many iterations of our bedroom, starting with brown, then adding in a blue wall, then painting it dark, then switching curtains, etc. Small changes here and there. But since we are both now in our 30s, we wanted something that feels cozy and romantic!
Here are some before photos! First up, the room when we first moved in:
Can you tell a bachelor lived here? Yikes!
Next, the first few incarnations of the room, the afore-mentioned blue accent wall, and the bed used to be on the other side of the room!
Here is the before of the closet that we finished!:
Now, the most recent “before,” from this June:
Me walking through the before and what I wanted to do! You can catch a glimpse of the very messy closet!
We kept the paint color, curtains, and curtain rods, and then did some small changes that made a HUGE impact on the space.
Here’s what we did:
- New bedding: I heard once that you should always spend the most money on the things that touch your skin, and that advice has always stuck with me! We invested in 100% pure silk sheets, and bought two new comforters, which was kind of an accident. The one I fell in love with was too hot for the summer, so we bought a lighter one. Now we have a summer and winter comforter, which is great because our bedroom temperature always seems to be the opposite of what we want.
- Upholstered the headboard: When my parents moved out of my childhood home, I wanted to keep a piece of it. They let me take an old door, and I turned it into a headboard. Sadly, a wooden headboard isn’t ideal…it hurts if you bonk your head on it! So I upholstered the door and voila! It’s so beautiful. At the bottom of the post, I shared the very easy process.
- RUGS: We have original hardwoods in our home, and I wanted to add some character and comfort. I have had a gorgeous vintage Persian rug, but my stupid dogs would use it as a potty if they didn’t want to go outside. So I had a local carpet cleaner clean it and now it’s like new! We also added two 100% natural and ethically sourced sheep skin rugs because they just feel SO GOOD on your feet!
- I added some cute decor on my nightstand that makes me oh so happy. Dried french lavender from Sisters Garden and Bloom in Kalona, Iowa, brass holder from ebay, a palmistry statue/hair tie holder from amazon, and the book “Change Me Prayers” by Tosha Silver, without the cover! This dark teal is a huge color inspiration, and although it isn’t a large statement piece, the pop of color makes me happy.
- At the last minute, my husband decided he wanted to finish a project that we have been talking about doing since we moved in: closing up his closet! The previous owners never put drywall over the bathroom plumbing, and we never wanted to do it because drywalling sucks. But alas, this seemed like a logical time to do this project. And yes, it did in fact suck. Drywalling is soooooooo tedious. He put the drywall up, raised the bar to his height (he’s 6’4″!), and I mudded the seams, sanded, caulked, and painted. We also added cute hooks for his belts and ties, lights, and he MASSIVELY decluttered. YIKES this project was a DOOZY. We thought this would be a good way to get practice for drywalling our basement, and now I think we will just hire it out.
- I moved a plant in here! And it really makes such a huge difference in the energy!
- You can’t see this in the photos, but we also bought a prettier piece of furniture for organization above the gun safe.
- Finally, the very first part of phase two was purchasing a piece of erotic art from Etsy! I haven’t shown you the wall of our room where our dressers are, because it’s always messy, and that’s the next project. I want to add a shelf where we can have photos and art! But one of the photos below, you’ll see the gorgeous erotic line drawing from Siret!
****You may notice that we don’t have any fancy throw pillows…and that’s because my husband hates them, so I honor his request for no throw pillows!****
Without furter ado, here is the after!
How to upholster a headboard (my method, anyways hahaha)
I absolutely love the vibe of the room now. It feels like a luxury to be in the room, and sleeping in those silk sheets is a joy. I have always loved sleep, but I love sleep even more now!
If you are interested in the previous makeover post I shared of our living room, read that here. Of course, the living room is totally different now, so maybe I’ll update that post in the near future!
Thanks for reading!
